General Guidelines For a Live-In Caregiver

General Guidelines For a Live-In Caregiver

Accommodation:

Your caregiver will require a warm, comfortable room with a door that has a lock and an outside window.  It is not necessary to have a room equipped with a TV or telephone, however if your caregiver wishes these you may want to assist her in obtaining them.  The caregiver is responsible for paying all long distance telephone calls.  You may deduct $325.00 to cover the cost of room and board.

Duties:

In childcare positions, children are usually the number one priority.  Your caregiver is solely responsible for your child’s/children’s well being in your absence.  She is also responsible for light housekeeping duties and meal preparation.  It is best to be as specific as possible with your expectations.  In elderly or disabled care positions the well being of the person being cared for is the number one priority.  You can also expect your caregiver to assist with dressing; bathing and other daily care tasks.  The caregivers cannot perform any nursing duties.  If you have further questions please contact us for clarification.

Payroll and hours of employment:

Overseas live-n caregivers are paid based on the current minimum wage of the Province they are residing in.   Your caregiver is entitled to two full days off per week.  These need not be consecutive days or weekends.  You should compensate your caregiver for excessive hours either by allowing for equal time off or overtime pay as per the Employment Standards Act.  Your caregiver is also entitled to statutory holidays after 30 days of employment and at least 15 days worked.  Your caregiver is also entitled to 4% holiday pay or 2 weeks paid leave after one full year of employment.

  Medical Coverage:

Foreign caregivers are entitled to BC Medical after they have been in Canada for 90 days.  It is not the responsibility for the employer to pay medical expense prior to the 90 days, only to ensure that your caregiver is aware of her option.
